River Crossing Techniques for Peninsula Malaysia Treks

Trekking in the wilder part of peninsula Malaysia often involves river crossing where you have to step into the water. The guide usually knows where are the safe crossing sites where the water current is slower. For these crossings, the water level typically ranges from ankle deep to waist level. There is usually no need for safety rope as the river flow is slow although care must be taken to avoid falling into the water with your heavy backpack. Here are some basic tips for crossing the river,

  • Remove socks or change to trek sandals if time permits.
  • Before entering the river, loosen your shoulder straps and unbuckle your hip belt and sternum strap. In case you fell into the river and unable to recover, you can jettison your bag.
  • Use a trekking pole or stick to provide stability. Note that a stick with larger diameter is better than a trekking pole since the narrow tip of the trekking pole can easily be caught in between stones and rocks on the river bed.
  • Bend your knees slightly and take small steps for better balance.
  • Where there are rocks and larger stones on the river bed, place your foot between them instead of stepping on them. Do not step on any rock surface that is underwater.
  • Ensure a firm footing before taking the next step especially where the water is above your knee level.
