Field Repair - Fabric Rips and Tears

Rips and tears can occur anywhere. Clothings, bags and tent are susceptible to rips and tears due to wear or a careless slip. The Whip Stitch is one the easiest and most versatile stitching technique and will be described here.

What you need
Needle and Thread, scissors or cutter

How to Use

  1. Tie a stopper knot (overhand knot) at one end of the thread.
  2. Punch the needle through one side of the gap and run the thread through until it stops at the stopper knot.
  3. From under the gap, punch the needle up through the other side of the gap. Run the thread until it tighten both edges together. Continue going down one side and up the other side.
  4. At the last round, leave a large loop of thread at one end. Punch the needle through one end. As you bring the needle partially up through the other end as shown below.
  5. Use the loop to coil round the needle at least three times.
  6. Pull the needle through and tighten the knot that is formed at the end of the base of the thread.
  7. Cut away the excess thread leaving behind about 5 mm of thread from the knot.
