Packing a backpack

Load distribution

Distribution of load in the backpack.

The key to proper loading of the backpack is to keep the weight balance on both sides of your body and the heaviest item(s) closest to your body. In general, the heaviest load should be in the middle of the backpack. However, if the terrain is mostly uphill, the heavier load may be transferred higher up the bag so that it is easier to keep the center of gravity on or in front of your legs as you bend forward during the trek. For mostly downhill treks, the heavier load may be shifted lower to help keep your balance and from falling forward.

Waterproofing

In tropical countries where trekking in the rain is expected or where river crossing is expected, use a big plastic/polyethylene bag to line the interior of the backpack. Another advantage of having a big plastic/polyethylene to hold your items in the backpack is that once the tent is set up, the dirty backpack may be left outside the tent and the big plastic/polyethylene bag with your items may be brought inside.

A backpack cover is good to have and will protect your bag from rain if it is not heavy. In tropical rainforest where the rain can get very heavy, having the backpack cover is usually not enough to keep the bag and the things inside dry. However, it is still good to have a backpack cover to protect the bag from the mud and soil.

Arrangement of items

Even with a larger plastic or polyethylene bag inside the backpack, it is prudent to pack items in separate waterproof bags in case of fuel leakage or any other liquid leakage. As a general rule, always place your food above your fuel so that it will not be contaminated in case of any fuel leakage. Jacket/coat for wet weather should be easily accessible and placed at the top. Food especially for lunch or to be consumed on the trek should be placed closed to the top. Sleeping bag and clothes which are usually needed only during the night should be at the bottom. Always pack them in waterproof bags or in plastic/polyethylene bag before putting into the backpack. It is recommended to have the tent placed in the middle of the backpack as it is usually the heaviest and bulkiest single gear.

Miscellaneous items

Snacks, sweets and bags of nuts may be placed in a pouch and clipped at the front loop of the shoulder straps for easy access and eating on the move. Note that the pouch should not be too big as to hinder normal arm movement during walking.

General precaution

Do not hang any unsecured item outside the backpack. Water-bottle placed at the side pouch of the backpack may fall out when the terrain gets rough especially if more than half the bottle is exposed.
