Outdoors Cooking Tips

Whipping up a good meal on a trekking trip can be relatively easy with the right tools and techniques

Utensils

Non-stick pan is very useful for treks as it reduces the need for cooking oil. Use wooden chopsticks for stirring and turning.

Recipe

Rice

When cooking rice, it is essential to use a pot with lid. After putting the rice into the pot, pour water into it. The distance from the top of the rice to the water surface is approximately equal to the depth of the rice. At all times, during cooking of the rice, DO NOT stir the rice. Once the boiling water level falls below the level of the rice, regularly check whether the rice is cooked. Add more water as necessary until the rice is cooked. It is better to have wetter rice rather than burnt rice. Allow the rice to simmer for about 5 minutes before consumption. This is to allow excess water to evaporate away.

Pasta (Macaroni)

Soak macaroni in water (normal temperature) for about half an hour to an hour to soften it before boiling. This will reduce the amount of gas used. Soak the macoroni in water upon reaching campsite or before reaching the campsite so that it is ready for cooking once the tents are set up.

Instant porridge and Instant mash potatoes combination

Instant porridge and Instant mash potatoes can be a tasty combination. When the instant porridge is almost cooked, add the instant mash potatoes into it and mix well

Tricks

If you must use your pot over a campfire, coat the base of the pot with a thin layer toothpaste before putting it over the fire. After cooking, the layer of soot can be easily washed off using water and a little scrubbing.
